Estill Voice Training
Estill Voice Training™ is the result of years of research by Jo Estill (1921-2010), a singer who asked the question 'How am I doing this?'
Jo's research resulted in the development of simple exercises to control the different parts of the voice independently and to be able then to use this control to make six voice qualities: Speech, Falsetto, Sob, Twang, Opera and Belt.
Research? That sounds a bit complicated!
Not at all! The exercises are based around things that we all do everyday without even realising it. It is what you do that makes a difference and that what Estill is about. If you want to know more about how your voice works that is fine.
One of the guiding principles of Estill Voice Training™ is 'knowledge is power'. As an Estill CMT Craig is trained to tailor my approach to the person I am teaching. It is you understanding your voice, at whatever your stage of development you are at, that is the most important thing to me.
Six Voice Qualities? Isn't that a bit limiting?
Not at all! These are just reference points, like points on a compass. Very often we are between voice qualities and that is the beauty of Estill Voice Training™- it is totally versatile and suitable for all genres of music.
Estill Voice Training™ gives you the control to be able to do what you want with your voice. It is not about what the teacher's ideal of what a good or a bad sound is or what kind the teacher likes. As long as the voice is being produced in a safe way, it is good!
Applications of Estill Voice Training
Estill Voice Training™ is part of the curriculum at many major music and theatre performance colleges in the training of singers, actors and dancers. This is the field in which Craig works.
